About this Recording
About this Recording |
On January 2, 1893, Gotebo, a highly respected chief, became the first Kiowa to be baptised a Christian. His wife and five other Kiowas were also baptised that same day. On November 11, 1894, the first Kiowa church was established by the Baptists at Rainy Mountain.
Several Kiowa men undertook extensive religious training, and soon were preaching the Gospel in their own language. Gotebo himself later became a deacon. He was asked by his tutor to compose a song in the Kiowa language to use in their services, and thus composed the first Kiowa Christian song. Soon after, other Kiowa church songs were composed and sung. Today there are several hundred songs sung by Baptists, Methodists, and Pentecostals.
The singers in this recording are of the Pentecostal religion, which first started among the Kiowa in 1924 near Mount Scott. For this recording the singers preferred to sing without accompaniment so that the words in the songs could be heard more clearly. It is their hope that many people will get some good out of hearing these songs.
We are grateful to the fine singers who appear in these two volumes, and we are very happy to present these traditional Christian church songs of the Kiowa.
