About this Recording
About this Recording |
This was our first Indian House recording. It was in the early evening of November 12th, 1966, that a group of us hiked a mile up a narrow mountain trail behind Taos Pueblo, carrying drum, battery recorder and microphones, to record the very first album of Taos Pueblo round dance songs. None of the singers had ever recorded before. We were at about 8000 feet. It was cold that night, and the singers started a campfire to keep warm. They started off with their newest songs, composed that year in ‘66, and later went back to some older songs composed in the 30’s, 40’s, and 50’s. We recorded 31 songs that night which came out in February of '67 on two LP’s called Round Dance Songs of Taos Pueblo – Vols. I and II. Between the songs you can still hear the crackle of that campfire from back then.
The soundclip is from the first song on the recording, composed by Orlando Lujan in 1966. T.I.
