American Indian Soundchiefs

Indian House Partnership

Indian House Music is privileged to be able to re-issue and release several recordings originally recorded under American Indian Soundchiefs. American Indian Soundchiefs Records was founded in the 1940s by the late Rev. Linn D. Pauahty, a Kiowa Indian Methodist minister from Carnegie, Oklahoma. Raised in a traditional Kiowa home, Rev. Pauahty had a keen ear for good Indian music, and throughout his extensive recording career sought out the best singers from throughout the Southern and Northern Plains. By the mid-1950s, he had the largest collection of Plains Indian music in the country.

approach

American Indian Soundchiefs introduced the popular "in-depth" approach to Indian recording, used today by most Indian recording companies. While early albums of Indian music often presented a variety of groups and types of songs on one album, Rev. Pauahty was the first to publish albums of all grass dance songs or all round dance songs sung by one tribal group. This specialized format was better suited to traditional Indian taste in music listening, and presented a coherent musical performance for the experienced listener.

Fidelity

Many Soundchiefs recordings are now considered 'classics' by Indian record collectors. We at Indian House are privileged to re-issue these rare recordings for a new generation of listeners. In addition to the re-issues, we are fortunate to have the opportunity to release several recordings which have never been published. Each Soundchiefs master tape has been carefully re-engineered, using state-of-the-art studio equipment for improved audio fidelity. We hope you will enjoy these historic recordings from the American Indian Soundchiefs collection.
